Even when Darren Jordan Cunningham was just a kid, DAZ or DAZ AUTOMATIC, growing up in Wolverhampton, there was something about him that stood out. 'When I was in school, I was always creative,' he recalls. “I was a very good counterfeiter, good at copying images. I was able to perfectly recreate the images. At school you would have plans for the semester and we were looking at Sikhism. I think I'm about seven years old. I was asked to create this huge mural of Guru Nanak using different shapes - using sequences, painted cotton wool, Sikh fabrics'. 'When I was in school, I was always creative,' he recalls. “I was a very good counterfeiter, good at copying images. I was able to perfectly recreate the images. At school you would have plans for the term and we were looking at Sikhism. I think I'm about seven years old. I was asked to create this huge mural of Guru Nanak using different shapes - using sequences, painted cotton wool, Sikh fabrics'. He stops while he thinks about it. “I ended up applying it to music. I create sketches, essentially like these fabrics, and collage them together ... once I see the image, it is further embellished and the process repeats. 'If his first obsession was drawing, his first love was football. In fact, had it not been for a late career injury while he was a promising young West Bromwich Albion player, football may have remained his constant obsession. Fortunately for the music, the injury caused a sudden change of direction. 'I got some turntables and learned how to DJ, created a small record collection and then started DJing at student parties in Wolverhampton.' Passionate about Detroit techno and especially Derrick May, Carl Craig and Kevin Saunderson, Cunningham didn't have a feeling how far from the mainstream he was. Luckily he met Matthew Parsons, who not only knew what he was playing but had a basic studio set up in his students. 'Making music was a bit of a black art,' recalls Cunningham. 'There was a curtain and I couldn't see what it looked like on the other side.' Parsons not only let him in and showed him the basics, when he went on a trip he sold him all of his kit for 200 pounds. Soon after, Darren moved to London. The PFA (Professional Footballers Association) ran a scholarship program for young footballers whose careers had ended due to injury and, as a result, funded his place in one of the first undergraduate programs in Recording Arts. It was then that the party started. “Before this point I was living cleanly. Total fitness. I've had periods where I didn't make music because I didn't have the money. I ended up buying synthesizers instead of paying college tuition. 'The result of this was a complete immersion in the dance subcultures of the capital and a crash course in production. “I was stuck, from a practical and experimental point of view. I've never used a metronome. That's how my style developed. 'The result of all this was not just the birth of Actress but of Werkdiscs, originally a night out with some friends, which became a label in time for Actress's first release in 2004. The label continued to discover and release. some of the most talked about artists of the emerging bass generation, namely Lukid, Disrupt and Zomby. In addition to directing the label, Actress remixed Various Productions, wrote for the seminal techno imprint Soma Records, released singles and EPs via Prime Numbers and Nonplus, and released the albums 'Splazsh' and 'RIP' on Honest Jons. the independent British record label created and founded jointly by Damon Albarn. He also traveled with Albarn to the Democratic Republic of Congo to record 'Kinshasa One Two', released by Warp in 2011. One of the preeminent and most unique voices in UK electronic music, since 2012 he has been running his own label together with Ninja Tune, with the release of 'Ghettoville' in 2014, a record described as 'inscrutable, disturbing and absolutely unique' (Uncut). An epilogue poem written for the press release in Ghettoville led people to believe that Cunningham had retired. This, in turn, led him to conceptualize his new work as 'Returning power to identity'. This fourth album was not only a poetic vision of British youth in an electronic age, it also managed to capture the imagination of the number retail charts. 20 in 'Top Dance / Electronic Albums' on the Billboard Charts.
