The Carpenters (written without an article) were an American vocal and instrumental duo made up of brothers Karen and Richard Carpenter. Producing a decidedly mellow musical style, they have become among the best-selling musical artists of all time, with 100 million albums and singles worldwide. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 11 albums, 31 singles, five television specials and a short-lived television series. The Carpenters had three singles at No. 1 and five singles at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen hits at No. 1 in the Adult Contemporary chart, and also 12 singles in the top 10. Their career ended in 1983 with Karen's death from heart failure caused by complications of anorexia.
